UCDx responds to Cabinet Office digital ID consultation

Catching up with ourselves, this to make those interested aware that UCDx responded to the recent Cabinet Office consultation re the proposed digital ID card.

Our view, in brief:  everyone needs to be able to prove their legal identity online. At the moment, a proportion of the population cannot for lack of sufficient conventional evidence (passport, driving licence, credit) record. The digital ID card, which will be a new form of legal credential in its own right, should fix the problem, and is to be welcomed.

However, the government’s initial intention is to make the digital ID card available as a ‘government credential’ via the government wallet. While this is a sensible first step, UCDx looks forward to the time when – as suggested in the consultation – individuals can download the ID credential from OneLogin (or the government wallet ?) into a personal wallet, chosen (we hope) from a UCD-style managed market of providers of portable, interoperable wallets.
